Dr. Z / Truetone Music Amplifier Offer
for Carmen Ghia and Mazerati Amplifiers  - AND
Info on some other Doctor Z Amps
Free V1 tube set for Carmen Ghia and Mazerati owners - new Z amp owners who
purchased from Truetone Music as their gift to the new owner - and from me, a gift
to current Carmen Ghia and Mazerati owners

A free set of three tubes is available for owner's of these amps.  This has to be given to folks in
person (I like to see the looks on faces as these three different tubes are tried out), and I do not pack
up tubes or stand in post office lines, no matter how much one is willing to pay.

1 12AX7C7 or 12AX7C9 Chinese tube - warm, linear.  For Blues, Jazz, or 60's rock.

1 7025 long smooth plate - lots of bite, lots of high end, and can also be used to recover high end loss
when using some pedals.

1 12AX7R2 or 12AX7R3 (R2 is the Sovtek 12AX7LPS - the R3 is the Electro Harmonix 12AX7EH)  - A
different tonal flavor.  Another option that some prefer for various needs.  These two tubes sound and
play very different.

With the stock ECC83S tube (which is a great tube for 80s rock and more agressive styles), this will
give the player a tonal range that can be implimented in a matter of a few seconds with no adjustments
or tools.

These tubes have all been traced and have their specs recorded and marked on their respective
boxes.  When we plug these in, each in turn, if you want more gain or less gain, faster or slower rise
time, or other characteristics, we can change these things at the same time.

The usual cost of these tubes are $28.00 each, as they go through the same process I use for the GT
SAG selected tubes from the Special Applications Group I head over at Groove Tubes.   Think of this
as at least $84.00 in free tubes, with a bit of a free seminar and a closer look into your great amp.

Why am I doing this?  I love these amps and am a bad businessman I guess.
All of the Doctor Z amps are very different, all unique, and all magic.  The Pentode front end amps (the Z28, Route 66, and
KT-45) are best left as they were delivered from my point of view.  They are just perfect the way they are.

The MAZ amps (the Jr. and Sr.) are just killer all around amps for any music style.  These amps have a more conventional
layout and tube compliment.  They have the set of controls that most folks are used to, and if you want to hear some amazing
clips of these amps, just head over to the Dr. Z website.

Now the subject here are two of the good Doctor's amps ... the Carmen Ghia and Mazerati.  Some folks think the Mazerati is
just a Carmen Ghia with two more output tubes.  This is far from the case.  The front end gain levels differ, the tone circuitry
differs, and there are other changes.  A great rig from my point of view would be a two amp setup using a Gina and a Mazerati
actually.

I have something of an attachment to the tones and playability of these two amps, the Carmen Ghia and Mazerati.  One trait
they share is a very simple and clean front end design.  There is a single preamp tube before you hit the phase inverter.  This is
a dual triode as supplied, usually an ECC83 JJ tube.

When one has a clean front end, amps respond really nicely to tube changes and the characteristics of the tube.  These two
amps respond to these changes amazingly well.  On the opposite end of the scale is my Mesa Mk 1, which I use to demo why
some amps respond well to tube changes while in others in makes very little difference.

On the Mesa, for those of you that have them ....  set input 1 (high cascaded gain using V1 and V2) to the same level as input 2
alone (which only uses V1).  When the amp is played using input 2, it is Fenderish in nature, and clean and even somewhat
lively.  Now hit input 1, and you will hear a loss of definition and articulation, a big loss, even though we are not driving hard, not
close to any distortion levels.  This is adding more "stuff and complication" in the circuit path.  Every component will change
tone.

I am not saying this is a bad thing.  This may be the tone you are after or prefer.

Back to the Carmen Ghia and Mazerati - very simple and clean front ends in the tone and gain stage.   These amps respond
dramatically to tube changes in V1.  This makes the amps even more versatile than they are stock, and this is just a blast to do
with no tools, no adjustments, in just a few seconds.
The Doctor Z MAZ Jr.

To me personally, this is perhaps one of the world's most versitile and all around amps.  Even with it's duet EL84 output
section, this is not limited to Vox or British amps sounds.  The tone stack is very Fender like, with an even wider range.  The
amp is available in reverb and non-reverb versions.

This amp is much louder and stronger than it's published wattage rating suggests.  This amp has a master volume layout, and
is very pedal friendly.    Typically when I play with a friend that uses one of these, in order for me not to get blanketed, I need a
grid biased amp such as my Fender Pro Reverb, rated at 50 watts, to keep up with this MAZ Jr.  These amps are light, loud,
and versitile.  If you want an amp that can cover a lot of musical bases, this amp should be considered strongly.

Below is some info from the Doctor Z website
After the success of the MAZ-38, and a more than a
few requests for the same tone in a smaller
package, the Doctor set off to create this little
beauty. As a result, the MAZ-18 "Junior" was born.
Like most offspring, this "chip off the old block"
began to take on a personality of its own. While the
overall "sound shape" is similar to the MAZ-38, the
"Junior" has a bit more gain.

Don't confuse the "18 Watt" with "weak and
flabby"... you'll be amazed by the definition and
headroom, all the way down to the low E... plenty of
power for a single 12" speaker or 2 10" speakers (as
pictured in the right photo taken at Saturday Night
Live) you'll use this amp in small clubs and never
think about needing to mic it... Got a larger venue?
Mic it and play away, because big amp tone and soul
is all there. This would also be a great amp for jazz
guitarists, whether you're looking to replace a small
blackface amp or looking for an amp with enough
complexity for fusion.
The end result is an amp that every strat
player will love, but it's not only for strats.
The "Cut" knob may be the most useful and
versitile tone shaping tool on any guitar
amp. Throughout its range, it produces a
large variety of sounds to satisfy players
using all guitars for most every style of
music. The "Cut" knob is best used after the
EQ is all set; turn it up for extra edge, turn it
down for a more vintage sound.
Comments from Dr. Z

"We found a need for a lower powered reverb combo
and created the MAZ Jr. It has more gain and distortion
than its big brother. Originally designed as a
"grab-and-go" Studio and small club amp, it has made its
way to some of the largest stages in the country. It's
perfect combination of front end and output distortion,
wonderful 3D reverb clean tone, matched with the
sweetest top end response and tight low end has made
this our most popular selling reverb combo last year. "

The Doctor Z     Z-28

Another magic amp with the EF86 pentode in the front end, and a duet of 6V6 output tubes.   Lots of
folks using these amps today, check out other areas in this Z area for photos.  You saw these
onstage at the 2003 CMA awards.

From the Doctor Z website -

The Z-28 is a 6V6 based amp. It utilizes the format of the Route 66, that is, a EF-86 pre- amp, a unique
Volume, Bass, and Treble full drive tone stack, and a tube rectified power supply. The Z-28 is rated at
approximately 22 watts, so it fits under the Route 66 and the KT-45. It has a more American type tone,
which some have described as Brown Tolexed Deluxe. The sweet sparkle of the 6V6 is ever present,
along with a smooth full distortion at a very useable volume level. I have maintained a very tight
bottom end, something that has been lacking in some 6V6 designs. Electro-Harmonix 6V6 at a
reasonable 375 Volt plate level, I was very impressed with this tube and knew I had to design an amp
which used it.

The Z-28 is available as a head, or as a 2x10 or 4X10 combo.

The Doctor Z    Prescription

From the Doctor Z website -

The Prescription is one of the Doctor's first amps, and its reputation will allow it to be one of the most
popular Dr.Z amps for years to come. Players across the country have sung its praises, critics have
gushed, and the word has spread. The Prescription is a British-voiced amplifier with its own distinct
personality.

The tone of this amp screams rock and roll when cranked, but when clean, its bell-like tone and
piano-like clarity on the low notes gives excellent articulation on complex chords. The Prescription is
complex and rich in harmonics, and gives incredible touch sensitivity and string-to-finger feel. So
whether you're looking for clean and pretty, or crunch of doom for some rippin' blues slide, the
'Script may be the amp for you.

"The popularity of 4 EL-84 amps was the catalyst for the design of the RX. I have never been satisfied
with cloning a vintage amp and calling it my own. The RX was conceived on a clean sheet of paper
creating a versatile single channel amp with simple user friendly features. I designed an amp with
such a wide band of rich tones its user list varies from Billy Gibbons to Steve Earle to Neil Zaza "

Power Output: 45 Watts

Paisley's latest Z rig.  Info is found in other areas of this website.
The Doctor Z Route 66

From the Doctor Z website -

"It makes other amps sound thin by comparison; like drinking skim milk rather than a milkshake."
-Buddy Whittington

The Route 66 is an all original Dr.Z design based on the incredible KT-66 tube originally built by
Genelex. This tube generates the "Milkshake Thick" tones, as heard on John Mayalls "Bluesbreaker"
album featuring Eric Clapton (the "Beano Album" as it is known to many).

This is not a duplicate of the Marshall JTM-45, but completely original spin with new tonal end
results. The "Route 66" has a EF-86 front-end. For those not familiar with this tube, it is a 9 pin
pentode , offering incredible gain and input dynamics. It is normally used in high-end stereos, most
often for its accurate transfer of input signal, balance, and headroom.

The amp features a deceptively simple tone stack, consisting of Volume, Bass, and Treble, which
feeds a non-negative feedback Phase Inverter, for true harmonic content and full output tube
dynamics. It has a GZ-34 Tube Rectifier to complete the round enveloped tone. The amp has
piano-like clarity with endless sustain, even at low volumes. Its 32 watts truly sing when driven hard
in a focused, thick distortion, with the tightest bass response you've ever heard.

The Route 66 received the first ever "Editors' Pick Award" from Guitar Player Magazine.

Here's what Mike Fuller of Fulltone Custom Effects had to say about the Route 66:

"Hey Doc,

When Jeff Jourard brought this Route 66 over I was semi-disinterested.....simply because, frankly,
I've never played an amp made after 1971 that I could stand. So he plugs it in and $%#^.....immediately
the jaws drop, and we start busting out old Strats, old Les Pauls, old SG/LP's ...didn't matter, they ALL
sounded great, no, spectacular!. So much compression, sustain, harmonics, touch, AND when you
turned down the guitar, that damned amp cleaned up without losing apparent volume to 50 fabulous
shades of dirty to semi-dirty to clean.

Anyway, thanks for making the best New amp, period...certainly the Best amp made in at least the last
30 years, and one of the best amps I've ever heard!"

--Mike Fuller, Fulltone

Comments from Dr. Z

"The Route 66 is our newest and most original design to date. The rich creamy tone of the KT-66
tubes make up the unique timbre of the Route 66. Full thick distortion and smokey sustaining clean
tones are the main palette of the 66.

Studio Master David Grissom states 'The Route 66 fits perfect between my Vintage AC-30 and my 50
watt Marshall in my tone arsenal' ".

The Doctor Z  KT45

From the Doctor Z website - (more photos and some of my own comments on the KT-45 page on this
website)

The KT-45 is yet another completely original design from the Doctor. The basis of this amp's design is
it's EF-86 (preamp tube) front-end and Tone Stack. The incredible timbre of the EF-86, along with gain
that's 50% higher than the hottest 12AX7, virtually inhales the tone straight through your guitar cord.
The KT-45's tone stack allows control of the gain in three separate parameters- gain and amount of
distortion in the treble registers, clear to swelling bass response, and overall volume and drive. This
allows you to dial in a Thick Top End, with a clean punching bass, or a swelling bottom with crystalline
highs. This is all done with plenty of clean to satisfy a Country picker, enough crunch for Rock & Roll,
and a singing sustain for R&B (british R&B that is! ).

Sonically , the KT-45 captures the rich tones of the WHO's " Live at Leeds" LP. It combines the
powerful driving distorted tones, with a touch of defined articulation. VOX AC-30/4 meets HiWatt.

Comments from Dr. Z
"My personal love for the sound of EL-34's caused the creation of this amp. Think of a cross between
the articulate power of a 50 watt HiWatt , and the sweet drive and sustain of a AC-30, and that would
best describe the tone of the KT-45. Joe Walsh had his hand in the final voicing of the KT-45 we
stopped when Joe said , 'Now it's Rickenbacker-friendly..' "

The Doctor Z  6545

From the Doctor Z website -

General Info
The 6545 is our first channel-switching guitar amplifier. Dubbed the 6545, the amp combines two
proven amp designs in one channel switching amp head. The amp incorporates the 1990 design of
the high gain SRZ-65 with the more recent KT-45.

Each hand-wired, point-to-point pre-amp has it's own set of non-interacting controls; adjusting one
channel's settings does not affect the other. The power section uses modified power transformers to
a pair of EL-34 power tubes, and operates in an ultralinear Class A/B mode.

"Dr. Z", states: "The SRZ-65 has been a proven cascaded-gain amp for over a decade. Now, by
coupling the smooth overdrive from te SRZ-65 to the punchy tones from the EF-86 based KT-45,
you've got the best of both worlds. Jump from singing high-gain leads to punchy driving rhythm
tones with the click of a footswitch."

The 6545 is graced with a new white front panel, providing great contrast to the original black
"chicken-head" knobs. Finishing the look is an amethyst jewel light, and a blue LED channel indicator.

The Doctor Z  MAZ Senior

These amps (and the Junior) are now available in Reverb and Non-Reverb versions.  Be sure to hit
the actual Dr. Z website to listen to the sound clips on this amp.  They are killer.

From the Doctor Z website -

General Info  - After a successful eight year production run, we have upgraded and enhanced the
classic tone of the MAZ-38. The updates include additional front-end gain (for a bit more drive at
lower volumes), a larger output transformer for a wider bandwidth with clear lows and a less
compressed sound. By incorporating the phase inverter design from the MAZ 18 Jr, the MAZ 38 Sr.
now uses no negative feedback , which provides "more, more, more..." More "thickness" more
harmonic content, and more sustain. We have also replaced the presence control with the extremely
useful "Cut" control, another innovation of the MAZ 18 Jr. So the child reshaped the father, and the
MAZ 38 Senior is the result.

The combination of all these improvements "adds some cholesterol" to the notes. This amp allows
you to hear everything: pickups, wood, fretboard material, strings, pick attack. Tones are clear, crisp,
and responsive to every one of the guitar player's nuances. The design improvements give you all
this along with a little more drive and sustain. The new transformer keeps the bass tight, focused,
and punchy to give you a great "3-D" clean tone.

Its distortion is described as smooth-as-satin, and it is truly unique. Want to add even more depth to
its already luscious tone? Crank on Dr. Z's specially designed Z-verb, and hear the biggest sounding
reverb to ever reach your ears.

The Dr. Z MAZ-38 is a truly versatile amp for the working or studio musician. Whether your forte' is
Blues, Country, Roots, or Rock, The MAZ 38 Senior will fit the bill.

The MAZ 38 Senior is available as a head with reverb, or as a 1x12, 2x10, or 2x12 reverb combo.

Comments from Dr. Z  - "The MAZ-38 is the amp that put Dr. Z on the map. Guitar Player called it 'the
best sounding Reverb combo we have ever heard, period." The new refinements offer an extra
quality without killing the things that made the original MAZ-38 great in its own right."

Buddy Whittington used his MAZ 38 Senior throughout the latest CD from John Mayall and the
Bluesbreakers.
